I watched a lot of independent film when I was single in the late 80s / early 90s. It made me feel like I was in on a wonderful secret. Last week I watched “Adrienne” on HBO, and it reminded me of these films. Of course I was in love with Adrienne Shelley then, so many of us of us were. She was beautiful, smart and independent. The writing in these films is great - the characters and dialog are top-notch. I’m watching “Trust” on this very day that Roe v. Wade was overturned by the SCOTUS, and Adrienne’s scene in the abortion clinic is incredibly touching. I missed all of the subtle comedy in “The Unbelievable Truth” the first time I saw it. This time, I can see Hal Hartley’s genius as a screenwriter. He picked up where Neil Simon left off. The cinematography is gorgeous. I’m watching all of this this on a 120” screen, probably better than the first time I saw it in the theater. The audio needs a little help in the first feature, but the other 2 are great. This is an expensive box set, in the era of streaming and rampant piracy, but I was damned happy to find it. These 3 films make me happy, and streaming is ephemeral. I want to pull these out and watch them every 5 years, or whenever I can find a kindred spirit that I can share them with.
