I use the 20dB boost this box offers when using my (indispensable) Beyer M-160 ribbon microphone with my Great River MP-2NV microphone preamplifier. It gives me more clean headroom going into my Apollo interface from the Great River, which is quiet enough at lower gain settings, but introduces noticeable noise at higher settings. Even with the dBooster, I still get the slight noise that's inherent in the preamp, so it's a balancing act. To me, it doesn't alter the sound of the microphone itself at all.I haven't tried one yet, but a super-clean preamp like one of the AEA pres designed specifically for ribbon microphones may produce an even cleaner result. Generally speaking, I'm more than happy with the Great River, so this dBooster is at least an acceptable half-measure. I haven't tried the other boosters on the market, like the Cloudlifter, which have a much simpler design, so I can't say which one works best. In any case, I'm happy with this one.Note that, obviously, clean gain can always be added in the DAW, but I like to monitor through the input during recording, and to set the input level from the start of the signal chain before hitting the DAW, which this helps me to do.
