Description

Japan. The Limited Edition box set features the original album, the two-disc LIVE IN ATHENS 1987, a song draft / demos CD, two DVDs, an LP version of the album and a 12 inch vinyl single. Peter Gabriel revitalized his career and scored one of the most critically and commercially successful albums of the ’80s with his 1986 release ‘So,’ which is being re-released in an expanded 25th Anniversary Edition on Oct. 2015. Launched by the enormous success of the lead single ‘Sledgehammer’ and its innovative music video — still MTV’s most-played clip of all time — ‘So’ was a worldwide hit, reaching No. 1 in the U.K., Canada, Italy, and Holland and No. 2 in the U.S. and Germany. The album also includes Gabriel classics like ‘In Your Eyes,’ the Kate Bush duet ‘Don’t Give Up’ and ‘Big Time,’ Gabriel’s parody of ’80s excess.

First off, I'm not going to be reviewing the album as I see some have. It's just that if this album weren't amazing, you wouldn't be looking at customer reviews or seriously considering purchasing this set in the first place and I wouldn't be writing this right now. The album is a masterpiece - bottom line. And for those who weren't completely satisfied with this because it didn't include the b-sides or videos, I shake my head. If its videos you want, give PG's "Play: The Videos" DVD a try. And if you want to view them for free, simply go to his website or his YouTube channel. If its the b-sides you want, I understand those aren't really available anywhere else. I do know some can be found on YouTube. And although I don't think they were essential to the set and might not have been in the "So" album context, I must admit that PG and his team should have them available somewhere for those real big fans of those mixes, b-side songs, etc. But personally I think that PG went farther than he had to on this box set which I openly applaud. When I first looked into this box set in October, I was a little confused on what was included. The contents included in this box set are...The original "So" album remastered on both CD and vinylExtra tracks "Courage" and "Sagrada" with alternate mix of "Don't Give Up" on separate vinyl"So" DNA - a step-by-step process of the creation of the "So" album"Live in Athens 1987" (or "P.o.V.") remastered on DVD"Live in Athens 1987" audio on CD60-page book"Classic Albums" documentary*All tracks available on vinyl and some videos from "Live in Athens 1987" are also available on digital download*First off, the "So" remaster sounds amazing - on both CD and vinyl. Really - the album sounds truly gorgeous. And that's all I have to say about that. The second vinyl record with the extra tracks and alternate of "Don't Give Up" are also a nice addition. "Courage" and "Sagrada" are great songs and the other version of "Don't Give Up" is beautiful. Before I talk about the DNA, let me point out that there's a video on PeterGabriel.com and YouTube that gives more about the extra tracks and the DNA that I recommend you see before purchasing this box set just once; it gives a more in-depth look at this awesome "bonus feature" to the album than any customer review can. But let me say for me the DNA was a wonderful and interesting experience. Moving on, the "Live in Athens" stuff is amazing. I loved "P.o.V.," but the version I have seen is really bad quality. I still loved the show, though, which is one of the many reasons that propelled me to get this particular set. The quality of the remaster is truly artful; you can tell PG and his team spent countless hours restoring this show to modern-day-concert-film status and it shows. It looks and sounds better than I have ever known and I'm glad this marvelous show got this marvelous treatment. Same goes for the audio CD - I love live CDs and since every performance in "Live in Athens" is amazing this was yet another plus to this whole set that made this a seriously desirable piece of music. The 60-page book is nice; it includes some cool photos and an introduction by Peter Gabriel. And the "Classic Albums" documentary is very interesting for those who love this album. Now about those digital downloads... I was quite excited when I found out that what was on vinyl is also available for download. I love things in both "hard copy" and digital form. The download went through without a hitch, but then I had to go through this whole hassle to get them to play. I found out that iTunes doesn't accept FLAC files, which is the form the downloads are in, and I had to download Songbird separately to play the material. Now Songbird is a great program, but I just like all of my stuff in the same place. By now I'm used to it, but I was sort of confused in the first place. I don't quite understand that if a good chunk of your listening public uses iTunes you wouldn't include a download that is compatible with that software. Shrug.Bottom line - I loved this set. I am completely satisfied with it. It was definitely worth it to me. The album is amazing and its great that its 25th anniversary was celebrated so well. Highly recommended indeed.
