Drafting Conspiracy proved to be the most fun I've had drafting--ever! [And, for the record, I was not the winner.] The cards will be welcome additions to my Commander decks, and have provided for some fun and entertaining kitchen-table matches with family and friends. This set is intended primarily to support multi-player draft events, where players then participate in three-, four-, or five-player matches (often called "pods"). It's secondary purpose is to provide cards that are beneficial in multi-player formats (e.g., "free for all" matches). For those not familiar with drafts, each player starts with three booster packs. All players open one pack, select a card, and then pass the pack to another player (first pack to the left, second to the right, and the third to the left). Players keep picking one card and passing until all cards are gone. [You can search for detailed draft rules online.]Conspiracy includes many cards reprinted from many sets, as well as new cards specifically created for draft and multi-player formats. The draft-specific cards include many that introduce actions during the draft, like the ability to take a second card from a pack or the ability to look at a different pack. The mult-player focused cards themselves have two types: traditional cards (creatures, instants, etc.) with abilities that impact other players (or the whole board), and a special class of cards (with the "Conspiracy" card type) that affect the game but cannot be removed from the game (they reside in the Command Zone). Conspiracy cards convey a benefit to their controller--perhaps a creature enters the battlefield with Haste, or a specific spell costs one colorless mana less, or you might even have a Conspiracy card that allows you to be the starting player!Note that cards with the Conspiracy card type are not legal (at this time) in sanctioned formats like Standard and Modern. They are intended for Conspiracy drafts, but you may use them with "house rules" and kitchen table (informal) games, though all players should agree to their use before starting a game. Other cards first published with this set are similarly restricted. [Visit the Wizards of the Coast Gatherer website if you have questions on the legality of any specific card.]***** RECOMMENDATION *****---------------------------------------------IF YOU LOVE PLAYING MAGIC IN A MULTI-PLAYER FORMAT, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND PICKING UP A BOX.PICKING UP A BOX IS ALSO A GREAT WAY TO HOST YOUR OWN DRAFT WITH YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.Some final notes for collectors:---------------------------------------The boxes I've seen opened thus far have held a significant amount of value (based on current prices at the time of this review). Brainstorm is available as a foil in this set. The new Planeswalker carries a premium price. There are many value cards, including Exploration, Stifle, and Misdirection. Each box I've seen opened has netted value well above the purchase price. [Note: this is not a guarantee that every box will contain value exceeding its cost--it's just a reflection of my experience opening my own box and watching friends open their boxes).
