So, I saw that this includes a 'pasta strainer' upper level bin, intended to be used with larger pine pellet style litter, with a pee pad in the very bottom to collect liquids.My cats have refused to use pine pellets, but I wondered if regular litter, with the pee pad at the bottom of the (upper) strainer level instead of below, would work.It Does.Place the pee pad on the bottom, and add litter on top of that.To change the litter, pull out the pee pad to 'engage' the filtering, shake a little, and the unused litter falls through into the bottom tray, and the clumps remain above, for easy emptying into a garbage can.Replace pee pad, fill with litter from the lower bin, place on top of each other, Done.No Scooping!!(It does come with a short handled scoop, which does work suprisingly well, but in other litter boxes!)Sometimes I've been able to reuse the pee pad, sometimes not (and depends on use, and whether your cat is an energetic digger, or not!)...but it works well either way, and all three cats are using it.(Two of them still seem to prefer to use the Litter Robot, but all of them have used this new one.)Of course there is the added expense of pee pads. 10 (17" x 23") are included.And can be had for as low as 15cents each, figure one a day, or approximately $5/month?), but I think not having to scoop is worth it.(It does still require you get down on your knees to remove the pad and upper 'strainer' bin, so won't save on knees much, but is much faster to change w/o scooping.)This is an interesting half way step between a litter robot device and 'plain old litter bins' - and since the the kit is about the same price as other premium litter boxes, why not try it?I measured both stainless bins at right around 17mils thick, so slightly above average metal thickness for stainless bins measured so far.This has become my - and my cats' - favorite litter bin - surprise!!Highly recommended. An easy 5 stars.
